2. Understand master pages and their role in the layout
3. Explore the development and use of style sheets
4. Explore the use of a grid and different ways to manipulate it
5. Understand designers’ relationship between both their client and their printer
6. Hone presentation skills such as printing, mounting, and pitching the design
Project Description
Students were asked to use Adobe InDesign to develop style sheets and a set of three master pages modeled exactly after a layout found in a prominent design journal. Once completed, they were given two articles and instructed to create a series of spreads in which they could plug the article in. They were then set the task of collecting images, scanning them, and writing captions to support the article. The final product consisted of eight cohesive spreads.
Design Rationale
I chose to model my style sheets and master pages off of a layout I found in the February 2005 issue of HOW magazine, a design journal I currently subscribe to. I was given two articles: The Theory of Everything and Feigenbaum’s Number. Since these articles centered around quantum mechanics, I collected pictures of the universe, fractals, Einstein, Darwin, and other science-related images. I then proceeded to create a color scheme that consisted of three pantone colors: a red, a yellow, and a blue. Once I had everything collected, I plugged my text and images into the layout, manipulating it whenever needed.
